Stijn Cole - Blueprint - Le Tréport

Stijn Cole is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ghent, Belgium. Cole’s practice draws on the relationship between the artist and his position in the landscape. Through a process involving analog and digital art forms, Cole often works with the fluctuating impact of time and light on a specific environment. In combining these altered states of nature in single compositions, Cole speaks of elusive and expansive moments created from subjective points of view.

In Stijn Cole's oeuvre, nature is used as a subject to hang stories and concepts on, abstraction and figuration alternate and Cole uses just about all classic media. Photography is often at the basis of his works but, as always, the artist adds a filter to the pure registration to give one aspect of reality more attention. For the ‘Blueprint’ series, Cole went to the coast and photographed the waves there; the works each combine two images of the same wave with a (time) fraction in between. The first, the ‘oldest’ of the two images was printed in a monochrome blue, the second, the ‘youngest’ in black and white on the back of a plexiglass plate floating a few centimetres in front of the blue one. This literally gives the expressive nature of the wave a second layer, the image takes on an extra dimension and appears rudimentarily coloured, the position of the viewer determining the work through that small distance between the two images. The title refers to the literal aspect of the work but also to a blueprint as a preliminary design for the final image.

Cole first showed these works at C-mine Genk but later also at Art Antwerp, Art Paris, Haus der Kunst Solothurn and in Madrid at Galeria Hilario Galguera, among others.
