AQUA VI - Reflections

Water reflects and invites reflection

March 7, 2020. After 20 years of recognition abroad, S.M.A.K. opened its doors to Kris Martin’s first retrospective exhibition in Belgium, entitled Exit. One of the installations from that show, Water, will come to the AQUALEX Concept Store in August and serves as the guiding thread of this new collection.

Kris Martin’s Water is a constellation rich in color, form, and texture, composed of water vessels scattered across the floor of the gallery’s front space. The whole exudes playful fragility and provokes thought about the role of water in our present (and future) world. Yet those who take their time are also enchanted by the shimmering reflections of light on the glass containers and on the trembling water that dances back and forth within them.

Hence the theme of this exhibition: reflections. Water reflects and invites reflection. It is at once gleaming superficiality and unfathomable depth. More than that: water has the capacity to awaken a transcendental experience. As with Shi Zhiying, who, through pure contemplation of the sea, transcended her physical self. Or with Kiki Bosch, who immersed herself in polar waters and thereby unleashed deeper, unknown forces within her. And you? What does water do to you?
